Japanese modern artist Yoskay Yamamoto is renowned for fusing American urban Pop Art with Japanese culture. Yamamoto is a self-taught artist who creates in a variety of media, such as painting, sculpture, and installation. Although he was raised in the United States, Yoshitomo Nara, a well-known Japanese artist and illustrator, frequently used comparable subject matter in his work. For example, Nara frequently depicted stylized young women in portraiture against patterned backdrops. "It really depends on each viewer to connect with the Japanese references in my work," Yamamoto said when asked to characterize his art. Sometimes they disappear, and other times someone points out the nuanced allusions that I was previously unaware of. I prefer that the viewers come to their own conclusion.
